Without experience breeders will usually find it hard to distinguish
between the longhair and shorthair coats. I have found that at 3 days of age the difference is visible when looking
between the toes and under the front pads for any sign of longer hairs along with general overall feel. To be certain
I do allow 5 days.
Below are pictures of two littermates aged 14 days. Look at the
feet and you will see the longhair has more distinguishable hair on the feet, head and ears.

The difference between the longhair and shorthair variety is the
coat length. The longhair coat is a maximum of 2inches on the body and slightly longer around the neck.
There is feathering on the legs and tail. The coat is silky smooth to the touch.
It is not a big task to care for the longhair. As with the shorthair
variety a weekly brush is usually all that is required with occassional trimming of the hair between the toes and under the
pads. This foot hair will collect grass seeds and mud if not kept neat. When wet the lh will
look exactly like a sh, until they shake. The water quickly disappears and it does not take long for these longer coats
to dry. The longer coat gives extra protection from prickles and biting insects and provides the
dog with protection from the elements.
